The Office of Sustainable Development in USAID’s Africa Bureau (AFR/SD) has oversight responsibility for monitoring H5N1, H1N1, and zoonotic-related technical assistance activities with the Bureau for Global Health (GH) and the Agency’s bilateral and sub-regional Missions. The Africa Bureau also works with other U.S. Government (USG) agencies that are developing and coordinating response efforts in sub-Saharan Africa. USAID, through its Missions is providing assistance to host-governments to convene donors, establish task forces, and develop pandemic preparedness plans in cooperation with other USG agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the World Health Organization. In addition, USAID is redirecting its disease surveillance program to include a strong focus on detecting and diagnosing avian and pandemic influenza and zoonotic diseases.
The Emerging Pandemic Threats Advisor, working with the AFR/SD Health team, will provide technical expertise to the Africa Bureau to develop and manage avian and pandemic influenza and zoonotic activities for sub-Saharan Africa as it relates to animal health and liaise with the Agency’s Avian and Pandemic Influenza (API) and Emerging Threats Unit. S/he will ensure that the Africa Bureau’s planning and response to avian and emerging pandemic threats is carried out in accordance with Agency and U.S. Department of State directives.
